Mineral vs. Chemical Sunscreen: What's the Difference?
- Mineral (physical) filters — Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide. These sit on top of skin and physically reflect UV rays away. They work the moment you apply them, tend to be gentler on sensitive, reactive, or rosacea-prone skin, and are the type most dermatologists recommend during pregnancy. The tradeoff is a slightly richer texture and, on some formulas, a faint cast.
- Chemical (organic) filters — Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, and newer filters like Tinosorb. These absorb into the skin and convert UV radiation into heat. They tend to be lighter, more watery, and disappear completely with zero white cast — but they need about 15 minutes to activate and can occasionally irritate very reactive skin.
- Neither type is "better" — they're suited to different skin. If your skin is sensitive, reactive, or you're pregnant, start with a mineral formula. If you want the lightest possible texture and tolerate chemical filters well, a chemical or hybrid formula will usually feel better under makeup.
What Makes Korean Sunscreen Different From American Sunscreen?
The difference isn't marketing — it comes down to regulation. In the US, the FDA classifies sunscreen as an over-the-counter drug, so every new UV filter needs a lengthy drug-approval process; the last new filter was approved in 1999, and most recently Bemotrizinol (Tinosorb S) was approved June 9, 2026. South Korea's MFDS classifies sunscreen as a "functional cosmetic," which allows newer, more advanced filters onto the market faster. That's why Korean formulas can achieve broad-spectrum protection with a texture that feels more like a serum or essence than a traditional sunscreen — lighter, faster-absorbing, and far less likely to leave a white cast, even on deeper skin tones.
SPF measures UVB protection (the rays that cause sunburn). PA measures UVA protection (the rays that cause aging and dark spots). US sunscreens only print "Broad Spectrum" as a pass/fail label — Korean sunscreens give you an actual graded number for UVA strength, which is why checking for PA++++ is worth doing on every product in this collection.
Some Korean sunscreens hit PA++++ using UV filters (like Tinosorb S, Tinosorb M, or Uvinul A Plus) that are not yet on the FDA's approved active-ingredient list for over-the-counter sunscreen.
